About PSF

A leading Shakespeare festival with an emerging national reputation for excellence, The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival is a professional theatre company in residence at DeSales University dedicated to producing the works of William Shakespeare and other master dramatists. About an hour north of Philadelphia and less than two hours from Manhattan, PSF is summer home to nearly 150 artists and artisans from around the country,  including in recent years winners and nominees of the Tony, Obie, Emmy, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Jefferson, and Barrymore awards. The company also produces musical theatre, children’s theatre, and a free outdoor “Green Show,” providing patrons of every age and experience a diverse range of theatre experiences in a festival environment.

From late May through early August, PSF offers 200+ performances of six full productions, plus several “one night only” performances. The Festival attracts more than 30,000 patrons from 20 states. The company performs in two air-conditioned indoor theatres in the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts. On the lawn outside, tables and chairs surround the Green Show stage – the setting for a lively program of Renaissance music and dance, puppetry and more.

Founded in 1992 by Rev. Gerard J. Schubert, O.S.F.S., the Festival has produced 23 plays of the Shakespeare canon in 19 seasons, as well as the works of Shaw, O’Neill, Coward, Williams, Singh, and Moliere. In 2008, the company introduced “Prologues,” an informal program held in the theatre prior to every performance of a Shakespeare play, giving audiences an opportunity to gain insights into the play from a member of the PSF artistic staff in an informal setting. In 2009, the company introduced “Shakespeare for Kids” – a high-energy one-hour production designed for children ages 4 to 10.

The company’s premiere education program, the Linny Fowler WillPower Tour, has toured 7 Shakespeare plays to 130+ schools throughout Pennsylvania and seen by 85,000+ students.

The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival at DeSales University is a not-for-profit professional theatre company and the Official Shakespeare Festival of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. PSF is a Constituent of Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for the American Theatre. PSF is a member of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America, a full member of the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, and a member of the Lehigh Valley Arts Council
