Mel Brooks' Hilarious Love Letter to Broadway

A Mel Brooks Musical

Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan
Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks
Directed by Jennifer Childs
Choreography by Tara Jeanne Vallee

Original Direction and Choreography By Susan Stroman. By Special Arrangement with StudioCanal.

June 11 to June 29 | Main Stage

From the zany comedic genius of Mel Brooks comes The Producers, the musical that redefined Broadway comedy! Join Max Bialystock, a washed-up Broadway producer, and Leo Bloom, his neurotic accountant, as they cook up the most outrageous get-rich-quick scheme in showbiz history: stage the worst musical ever, pocket the investors’ cash, and run. What could possibly go wrong? Everything—hilariously!

Adapted from Brooks’ 1967 film, this laugh-a-minute romp features larger-than-life characters, wickedly funny double entendres, and splashy show-stopping musical numbers. With a truly hysterical book co-written by Brooks and Thomas Meehan, The Producers proudly proclaims itself an “equal opportunity offender,” skewering Broadway traditions with enough chutzpah to fill Times Square!

It’s Mel Brooks at his absolute best—bawdy, irreverent, and satirical—delivered with his signature style that’ll leave you howling in the aisles!

Running Time: 2 hours and 45 minutes, with one 15-minute intermission
Content advisory: Mel Brooks…need we say more? But seriously, this production contains mature themes, suggestive humor, and adult language.
Recommended Age: 13+

The Producers is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com

Borscht Belt Meets Broadway: The Comic Legacy of The Producers

As a comedy history nerd, Mel Brooks has always loomed very large in my life. Young Frankenstein is one of my top five favorite films, and I remember gasping and choking with laughter the first time I saw Blazing Saddles. He has a singular ability to blend broad comedy with boundary-pushing social satire, creating a comic style that is completely his own—The Producers is an incredible example of that.

The Producers has become such an established part of the musical theatre canon that I sometimes forget the original film was written in 1967, just over 20 years after World War II ended. Can you imagine? They say comedy is tragedy plus time…but was that enough time to allow audiences to laugh at Hitler? Certainly not for some, as it was difficult to find backers for the movie (which was then titled Springtime for Hitler) and which, when it premiered, got killed by some critics for being tasteless in its timing.

The Producers Opens The Main Stage Season

Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival proudly presents The Producers, the uproarious, Tony Award-winning musical comedy that took Broadway by storm. Based on Mel Brooks’ Oscar-winning 1967 film, this side-splitting satire hits the Main Stage at the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts at DeSales University, delivering nonstop laughs, show-stopping dance numbers, and an outrageously entertaining story. Previews are June 11 and 12, with Opening Night on June 13; running through June 29.

With a riotous score by Mel Brooks, this cult-classic musical comedy follows down-on-his-luck producer Max Bialystock (Scott Greer) and timid accountant Leo Bloom (Michael Doherty) as they scheme to produce the worst show ever and pocket the profits. But when their outrageous plan backfires and their disaster becomes a surprise hit, chaos—and comedy—ensues.
