Lauded by\u00a0The Philadelphia Inquirer\u00a0<\/em>as a \u201cmasterful solo show,\u201d\u00a0The Great Divorce returns to the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival main stage for one night only performance on Monday, August 1st at 7:30pm on the Center Valley campus of DeSales University.<\/em><\/p>\n Adapted and performed by Anthony Lawton,\u00a0The Great Divorce\u00a0<\/em>is based on the novel by C.S. Lewis, perhaps best known for\u00a0The Chronicles of Narnia\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Screwtape Letters. Lawton also performed the piece at PSF in 2009.<\/em><\/p>\n The Great Divorce\u00a0is an allegorical journey between Hell and Heaven, a journey that blends philosophical imagination and theatrical magic. The\u00a0Philadelphia City Paper\u00a0<\/em>wrote: \u201cUnmissable! From the quiet, seemingly casual beginning to the unforgettable final moments, Lawton has us in the palm of his hand.\u201d<\/p>\n Lawton\u2019s antics as Luther Billis in the season opener South Pacific won accolades from critics and patrons.\u00a0<\/em>\u201cWe\u2019re delighted to bring Tony back for another performance,\u201dMulcahy says.\u00a0\u201cThe Great Divorce\u00a0<\/em>is a perfect offering for patrons to see the range of Tony\u2019s work in one season.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTony\u2019s work as a member of the acting company for more than ten years is well regarded by our patrons,\u201d Mulcahy says. Last summer, Lawton performed an interpretation of another Lewis novel,\u00a0The Screwtape Letters.<\/em><\/p>\n Artist Biography:\u00a0 Anthony Lawton has acted in Philadelphia for 18 years. Favorite roles include George in\u00a0Of Mice and Men (<\/em>Walnut Street Theater); Austin in\u00a0True West<\/em>\u00a0and Feste in\u00a0Twelfth Night<\/em>\u00a0(Lantern Theatre); \u201cman\u201d in Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (1812 Productions); and The Devil and Billy Markham, The Great Divorce, and The Screwtape Letters. Film: Unbreakable, Invincible; TV: Hack, Cold Case. The Philadelphia City Paper named him the city\u2019s \u201cBest One- Man Theatre.\u201d His original play, The Foocy (2005), received five Barrymore nominations, including one for Best New Play.
