Karen Zacarías

Karen Zacarías (Playwright, Native Gardens) is an award-winning playwright who’s written 18 plays. She’s written adaptations for Just Like Us and How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent, based on the novel by Julia Alvarez. She wrote her play Mariela in the Desert in both English and Spanish. Her Latin American adaptations of classics include Cinderella Eats Rice and Beans: A Salsa Fairy Tale, and Oliverio: A Brazilian Twist. Her musicals include The Magical Piñata, Frida Libre, Ferdinand the Bull, and Jane of the Jungle. She founded Young Playwrights’ Theater, an award-winning theater company that teaches playwriting in local public schools in Washington, D.C., where she lives with her husband and three children.
